Galerie Falk Losniza is delighted to present Women & Men, a solo exhibition by Eli Keszler, on view in the gallery’s upper exhibition space.

Face blindness, or blind faces? Women and men, or men and women? I began drawing figures without faces, faces without figures — faces in motion and forms with a kind of rhythmic jitter and intensity. I layered pastels with paint and earth: mud, wood, leaves, texturing and perhaps grounding these ungrounded images.

I wanted to capture the moment someone looks away — one way or the other, their form blurred, rhythmically morphing or distorted, much like music can be. Small lines creating texture, pattern and vibration. There is something haunting and mysterious about that moment — it is whatever the opposite of reciprocation is, whatever the opposite of recognition is. The gaze over a face, the blur of a drawing — both capture something profound. To me, that’s the essence of these mediums — painting, drawing, photography — they show us things we feel but can’t normally see. Maybe that’s the point. Once I started, I couldn’t stop. Different forms and techniques kept producing this same elusive, seductive, feeling, refracted and reflecting themselves through the pieces.
